The PAN approach

The REILS project employs a novel methodology known as the Process-Actors-Narratives (PAN) approach. It combines traditional legal analysis with a comprehensive examination of the procedural history of cases, the key figures involved, with their contribution,  and the broader historical, political, and social narratives within the judgment was rendered.

This holistic approach aims to provide a richer, more nuanced understanding of the European Court of Justice’s contributions during this pivotal era.

See the ECJ FOUNDATIONAL JUDGMENTS section to see how the PAN works in practice.

The PAN (Process-Actors-Narratives) approach

1

Process

The “Process” element examines the procedural history leading to the ECJ rulings

2

Actors

The “Actors” component focuses on the individuals involved in those cases—judges, lawyers, and litigants

3

Narratives

The “Narratives” component seeks to determine the meaning of these decision within their historical context and their contribution to the process European integration
